How to Make Healthy and Flavorful Indian Appetizers

1. Vegetable Samosas

Samosas are a classic Indian snack, traditionally filled with spiced potatoes and peas. For a healthier twist, we can use a whole wheat dough and load them with a mix of vegetables.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, beans)
  • 1 potato, boiled and mashed
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Mix whole wheat flour with salt and water to form dough. Cover and let it rest.
  2. Heat a teaspoon of oil, add cumin seeds, and let them splutter. Add mixed vegetables, mashed potato, garam masala, and salt. Cook for a few minutes.
  3. Roll out small portions of the dough, fill them with the vegetable mix, and shape them into triangles.
  4. Fry until golden brown or bake at 400°F (200°C) for healthier samosas.

2. Paneer Tikka

Paneer tikka is a popular vegetarian dish that is full of flavors and easy to make in a healthy way.

Ingredients:

  • 200g paneer, cubed
  • 1 cup bell peppers, cubed
  • 1 cup onions, cubed
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 tbsp tikka masala
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, mix yogurt, tikka masala, lemon juice, and salt. Add paneer, bell peppers, and onions; marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat the grill or oven. Thread the marinated ingredients onto skewers.
  3. Grill for about 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until the paneer is slightly charred.

3. Chickpea Sundal

This healthy, protein-packed snack is quick to prepare and incredibly satisfying.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup boiled chickpeas
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal (optional)
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tbsp coconut, grated (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Heat a pan, add mustard seeds, and let them pop. Add urad dal, green chilies, and sauté for a minute.
  2. Add boiled chickpeas and salt, mix well, and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  3. Garnish with grated coconut and cilantro before serving.

4. Spinach and Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms

This appetizer combines the earthiness of mushrooms with the nutrition of spinach and the richness of cheese.

Ingredients:

  • 12 large mushrooms, cleaned
  • 1 cup spinach, chopped
  • 1/2 cup low-fat cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
