How to Make Sweet Indian Parathas and Baked Treats

Sweet Indian parathas are a delightful twist on the traditional savory variety, combining flakiness with a hint of sweetness. These parathas are not only easy to prepare but also make for an excellent dessert or snack. Additionally, baked treats inspired by Indian flavors can elevate your culinary repertoire. Here’s how to create sweet Indian parathas and some simple baked treats that everyone will love.

Sweet Indian Parathas Recipe

To make sweet Indian parathas, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup jaggery or sugar (adjust based on sweetness preference)
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut (fresh or desiccated)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • Water (as needed for dough)
  • Ghee or oil (for frying)

Instructions:

Step 1: In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and a pinch of salt. Gradually add water and knead to form a soft dough. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Step 2: In another bowl, mix the jaggery (or sugar), grated coconut, and cardamom powder to create the sweet filling.

Step 3: Divide the dough into equal-sized balls. Take one ball and roll it out into a small circle.

Step 4: Place a spoonful of the sweet filling in the center of the rolled-out dough. Carefully fold the edges to encase the filling, then gently roll it out into a larger circle, taking care not to let the filling spill out.

Step 5: Heat a tava or skillet over medium heat. Once hot, place the rolled paratha on the tava. Cook until golden brown, flipping occasionally. Spread a little ghee on both sides for extra flavor.

Step 6: Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling. Serve hot, drizzled with honey or accompanied by yogurt.

Baked Indian Treats

In addition to sweet parathas, Indian-inspired baked treats offer a variety of flavors and textures. Here are a couple of easy recipes to try.

Cardamom and Pistachio Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped pistachios
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon milk (if needed)

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a bowl, mix the softened butter and powdered sugar until creamy. Gradually add the flour, baking powder, cardamom powder, and salt, mixing until combined. If the dough is too dry, add a tablespoon of milk. Fold in the chopped pistachios.

Form small balls of dough and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Flatten each ball slightly and bake for 12-15 minutes until lightly golden. Allow to cool before serving.
