How to Make Traditional Indian Beverages for Your Family

India is known for its vibrant culture and diverse culinary traditions, particularly when it comes to beverages. Here’s how to make some beloved Indian drinks for your family.

Mango Lassi

The mango lassi is a creamy, sweet yogurt drink that is perfect for hot days and pairs well with spicy dishes.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe mango, peeled and chopped
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder (optional)
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a blender, combine the chopped mango, yogurt, milk, sugar, and cardamom powder.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a little more milk.
  3. Serve chilled in glasses, over ice if desired.

Masala Chai

Masala chai, or spiced tea, is a warm beverage that combines black tea with a variety of spices and milk. It’s perfect for cozy evenings.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons black tea leaves or 1 tea bag
  • Milk (to taste)
  • 1-2 teaspoons sugar (adjust to taste)
  • Whole spices: 1-2 cardamom pods, a small piece of ginger, a clove, a small cinnamon stick (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a pot, bring water to a boil. Add the black tea leaves and the whole spices.
  2. Let it simmer for 5 minutes for the flavors to infuse.
  3. Add milk and sugar, and bring to a boil again.
  4. Strain into cups and enjoy your homemade masala chai.

Buttermilk (Chaach)

Buttermilk is a refreshing and hydrating drink made from yogurt, commonly consumed in many Indian households, especially in summers.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped mint leaves or coriander (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk the yogurt until smooth.
  2. Add water gradually and continue to whisk until well combined.
  3. Add roasted cumin powder and salt. Mix well.
  4. Garnish with chopped mint or coriander if desired. Serve chilled.

Tender Coconut Water

Tender coconut water, or 'nariyal pani,' is an extremely refreshing drink packed with electrolytes, making it ideal for hydration.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tender coconut

Instructions:

  1. Simply puncture the tender coconut at its top using a sharp knife or a special tool.
  2. Serve the coconut water fresh straight from the shell.

Jaljeera
