5 Traditional Indian Breakfasts You Can Make in 10 Minutes

When it comes to breakfast, Indian cuisine offers a delightful range of options that are not only delicious but also quick to prepare. Here are five traditional Indian breakfasts you can whip up in just 10 minutes.

1. Poha

Poha is a popular breakfast dish made from flattened rice and is known for its light and fluffy texture. To prepare it, rinse 1 cup of poha under cold water and drain. In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil, add mustard seeds, and let them splutter. Then, toss in a handful of peanuts, chopped onions, and green chilies. Stir for a minute and add the rinsed poha along with some turmeric and salt. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, garnish with coriander, and serve hot.

2. Upma

Upma is a savory dish made from semolina (sooji). Begin by heating 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, and a few curry leaves. Once they splutter, add 1 cup of semolina and roast for a couple of minutes. In a separate bowl, dissolve 2 cups of boiling water with salt. Pour the boiling water into the roasted semolina, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cover and let it steam for 5 minutes. Fluff it up before serving.

3. Dosa with Chutney

If you have dosa batter ready, making dosas takes just a few minutes. Heat a non-stick pan and pour a ladle of batter, spreading it in a circular motion. Drizzle a little oil around the edges and cook for about 2 minutes until golden brown. Serve with coconut chutney or tomato chutney. If you don't have chutney on hand, a quick mix of yogurt with chopped cucumbers and salt works wonders too.

4. Masala Omelette

For a protein-packed start to your day, try a masala omelette. Whisk 2 eggs with salt, pepper, finely chopped onions, tomatoes, green chilies, and coriander. Heat a teaspoon of oil in a pan, pour in the egg mixture, and cook for 3-4 minutes, flipping halfway. Serve it with toast or fresh parathas for a hearty meal.

5. Aloo Parantha

Aloo parantha is stuffed flatbread that can be made quickly. Boil and mash 1-2 potatoes. Mix in chopped green chilies, coriander, and spices like cumin and garam masala. Stuff this mixture into whole wheat dough balls, roll them out, and cook on a hot griddle with a bit of ghee or oil until golden on both sides—about 5 minutes total. These can be enjoyed with yogurt or pickle.

These traditional Indian breakfasts not only cater to your taste buds but also fit perfectly into a busy morning routine. With just a little preparation, you can enjoy a wholesome meal in under 10 minutes!
