How to Make Delicious Indian Gulab Jamun at Home

Gulab Jamun is a classic Indian dessert that is loved by many for its soft, spongy texture and rich syrupy sweetness. Making this delightful treat at home is easier than you might think. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create delicious Indian Gulab Jamun.

Ingredients Required

To make Gulab Jamun, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup of milk powder
  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour (maida)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1/4 cup of milk (add more if needed)
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom powder
  • Oil or ghee for deep frying

Preparing the Sugar Syrup

Start by preparing the sugar syrup as it needs time to cool. In a pan, combine 2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of water. Add 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom powder for flavor.

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes until it reaches a slightly thin syrup consistency. Remove from heat and let it cool.

Making the Dough for Gulab Jamun

In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of milk powder, 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Mix the dry ingredients well.

Add 2 tablespoons of ghee and mix until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Gradually add milk, a little at a time, kneading gently until you achieve a smooth and soft dough. Be careful not to over-knead as this can make the Gulab Jamun hard. Allow the dough to rest for about 10-15 minutes.

Shaping the Gulab Jamun

After resting, take small portions of the dough and roll them between your palms to form smooth balls. Make sure there are no cracks, as this can cause them to break when frying.

Frying the Gulab Jamun

Heat oil or ghee in a deep frying pan over low to medium heat. Test the temperature by dropping a small piece of dough into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.

Carefully add the rolled dough balls into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them slowly, turning them gently until they are golden brown and cooked through. This can take about 8-10 minutes. Once fried, remove them using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Soaking in Sugar Syrup

While the Gulab Jamun is still warm, transfer them into the cooled sugar syrup. Let them soak for at least 1-2 hours, allowing them to absorb the syrup and become soft and flavorful.

Serving Gulab Jamun

Gulab Jamun is best served warm or at room temperature. You can garnish them with a sprinkle of chopped nuts like almonds or pistachios for an extra touch. Enjoy this classic Indian dessert at family gatherings, festivals, or as a sweet treat after meals.

Tips for Perfect Gulab Jamun

  • Ensure the dough is soft. If it's too dry, the Gulab Jamun will not turn out fluffy.
  • Keep the oil at a low temperature to ensure even cooking.
  • Let the syrup cool before adding the warm Gulab Jamun to prevent them from dissolving.

Now that you know how to make delicious Indian Gulab Jamun at home, it’s time to try out this traditional recipe and impress your family and friends with your culinary skills!
