How to Make Indian Soup with Tomatoes and Green Chilies

Indian soup, often full of rich flavors and vibrant ingredients, can be a delightful addition to any meal. One popular variety features tomatoes and green chilies, providing a perfect balance of tanginess and spice. Here’s a simple guide on how to make this delicious Indian soup at home.

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1-2 green chilies, slit (adjust based on heat preference)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon oil (vegetable or ghee)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Base
In a pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds until aromatic. Next, add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onion turns translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 2: Cook the Tomatoes
Add the chopped tomatoes and green chilies to the pot. Stir in the turmeric powder and salt. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes break down and become soft.

Step 3: Add Broth and Simmer
Pour in the vegetable or chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can blend the soup at this stage using an immersion blender.

Step 4: Final Touches
Once the soup has reached your desired consistency, stir in garam masala if using. Taste and adjust salt as necessary. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 5: Serve
Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves. Enjoy your tomato and green chili Indian soup with crusty bread or steamed rice for a complete meal.

Tips for Making the Perfect Indian Soup

  • You can add other vegetables like carrots or bell peppers for extra nutrition.
  • If you prefer a spicier soup, increase the number of green chilies or add red chili powder.
  • For a creamy texture, stir in a splash of coconut milk or cream before serving.
  • Lemon or lime juice can be added to enhance flavor just before serving.

This simple and delicious Indian soup with tomatoes and green chilies will definitely warm your soul and please your taste buds. Enjoy making and sharing this nourishing dish!
