How to Make Tasty Indian Breakfasts That Are Full of Flavor

When it comes to breakfast, Indian cuisine offers a tantalizing array of dishes that are not only delicious but also packed with flavor. From spiced dosas to fragrant upma, these breakfasts can set a vibrant tone for your day. Here’s how to make some tasty Indian breakfasts that will leave you craving for more.

1. Masala Dosa

Masala dosa is a classic South Indian dish that consists of a crispy fermented crepe made from rice and lentils, filled with a spiced mashed potato filling.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/3 cup urad dal (black gram)
  • 1 cup potato (boiled and mashed)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • Green chilies (to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for cooking

Instructions:

  1. Soak rice and urad dal in water for 6-8 hours. Grind into a smooth batter and let it ferment overnight.
  2. For the filling, heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and chopped onions. Sauté until golden, add mashed potatoes, green chilies, and salt. Mix well and set aside.
  3. Heat a non-stick pan, pour a ladle of dosa batter, and spread it in a circular shape. Drizzle oil around the edges and cook until golden brown.
  4. Place the potato filling in the center, fold the dosa, and serve hot with coconut chutney and sambar.

2. Poha

Poha is a beloved breakfast dish made from flattened rice, perfect for those quick morning meals and is incredibly easy to prepare.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups poha (flattened rice)
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 potato (cubed)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • Green peas (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander (for garnish)
  • Lemon juice (to taste)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the poha in cold water and drain it well. Set aside.
  2. In a pan, heat oil, add mustard seeds, and let them splutter. Add chopped onions and cubed potatoes, and sauté until soft.
  3. Stir in turmeric powder and salt, then add the poha and mix gently. Cook for a few minutes until heated through.
  4. Finish with peas, garnish with coriander, and drizzle lemon juice before serving.

3. Upma

Upma is another quick and flavorful dish made from semolina, often enriched with vegetables and spices.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup semolina (rava)
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 carrot (grated)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal (split black gram)
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • Curry leaves (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Dry roast semolina in a pan until light golden and aromatic. Remove and set aside.
  2. In the same pan, heat oil, add mustard seeds and urad dal, allowing them to splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions, grated carrot, and sauté until soft.
  4. Pour in water and add salt; bring it to a boil. Stir in roasted semolina gradually, whisking to prevent lumps.
  5. Cook for a few minutes until the upma thickens, then garnish with curry leaves and serve hot.
