How to Make Classic Indian Soups at Home

Classic Indian soups are a delightful blend of rich spices, fresh ingredients, and bold flavors. They are not only comforting but also packed with nutrients. Here’s how to make some iconic Indian soups at home, using simple recipes that are easy to follow.

1. Dal Shorba (Lentil Soup)

Dal Shorba is a hearty and nutritious lentil soup that forms part of many Indian meals.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow split lentils (moong dal)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil

Instructions:

  1. Heat ghee in a pot and add cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.
  2. Add onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Stir in tomatoes and green chilies, cooking until tomatoes soften.
  4. Add lentils, turmeric, salt, and water. Bring to a boil.
  5. Reduce heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes until lentils are soft.
  6. Blend the soup to a smooth consistency if desired. Adjust with water for your preferred thickness.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot.

2. Tomato Soup with Indian Spices

Tomato Soup is a classic dish, and with Indian spices, it takes on a delicious twist.

Ingredients:

  • 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil or coriander for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a pot, heat butter and add cumin seeds. Once they start to splutter, add onions and garlic.
  2. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
  4. Add garam masala, salt, and pepper, then pour in the vegetable broth.
  5. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, then blend until smooth.
  6. Garnish with fresh basil or coriander before serving.

3. Spinach Soup (Palak Shorba)

This vibrant green soup is packed with iron and vitamins, making it a healthy choice.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups fresh spinach leaves, washed and chopped
  • 1 potato, diced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green chili, slit
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon oil or butter

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a pot, add cumin seeds, and allow them to darken.
  2. Add onions and green chili and sauté until onions are translucent.
  3. Add the potato and spinach. Stir for a few minutes.
  4. Pour in the water and add salt, bringing it to a boil.
  5. Simmer until potatoes are soft, around 15 minutes.
  6. Blend the soup until smooth. Serve hot.

4. Carrot and Ginger Soup

This soothing soup combines the sweetness of carrots with the warmth of ginger.

Ingredients:

  • 3 large carrots, chopped
  • 1 onion
