How to Make Spicy Indian Vegetable Chapati

If you’re looking to spice up your meals with a healthy and delicious dish, spicy Indian vegetable chapati is a perfect choice. This traditional Indian flatbread is not only easy to prepare but also packed with nutritious ingredients. Here’s how to make spicy Indian vegetable chapati step-by-step.

Ingredients

To make spicy Indian vegetable chapati, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup mixed chopped vegetables (like carrots, bell peppers, and spinach)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Water, as needed
  • 2 tablespoons oil (optional)
  • Ghee or butter for cooking (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, chopped vegetables, ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well to ensure the vegetables are evenly distributed throughout the flour.

Gradually add water to the mixture, kneading to form a smooth and pliable dough. If you prefer a richer taste, add oil while kneading. Once the dough is ready, cover it with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 20-30 minutes.

Step 2: Divide the Dough

After the resting period, knead the dough again briefly and divide it into equal portions, roughly the size of a golf ball.

Step 3: Roll the Chapati

Take one dough ball and flatten it slightly. Dust it with a little dry flour to prevent sticking. Using a rolling pin, roll it out into a flat, circular disc, about 6-8 inches in diameter. Ensure it is evenly rolled to promote uniform cooking.

Step 4: Cook the Chapati

Heat a tava or non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once hot, place the rolled chapati on the tava. Cook for about 30 seconds or until small bubbles begin to form on the surface.

Flip the chapati using tongs or a spatula and cook the other side for another 30 seconds. Gently press with a spatula to encourage puffing. You can apply ghee or butter on top for extra flavor, if desired. Flip once more and cook for a few seconds. Remove from heat and place the chapati in a container lined with a clean kitchen towel to keep it warm.

Step 5: Repeat with Remaining Dough

Repeat the rolling and cooking process for the remaining dough balls until all chapatis are made.

Serving Suggestions

Spicy Indian vegetable chapatis are best enjoyed hot! Serve them with a side of yogurt, pickles, or your favorite Indian curry. These chapatis also make for a great breakfast option when accompanied by a glass of fresh juice or tea.

Tips for Perfect Chapatis

  • Ensure your dough is well-kneaded for a soft texture.
  • Resting the dough is crucial for elasticity.
  • Roll evenly to promote equal cooking.
  • Cook on medium heat to avoid burning.
