How to Make Indian Tofu Tikka

Tofu Tikka is a delicious and healthy vegetarian dish that brings together the rich flavors of Indian spices with the protein-packed goodness of tofu. Making Indian Tofu Tikka at home is not only easy but also a fun culinary adventure. Here’s how you can make this mouthwatering dish.

Ingredients

  • 400g firm tofu, pressed and cut into cubes
  • 1 cup yogurt (dairy or plant-based)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika or red chili powder (adjust for spice level)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 bell pepper, cut into chunks
  • 1 onion, cut into chunks
  • Cilantro leaves for garnishing

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Marinade

In a large bowl, combine the yogurt, vegetable oil, lemon juice, garam masala, cumin powder, coriander powder, paprika, turmeric, and salt. Mix well to create a smooth marinade.

Step 2: Marinate the Tofu

Gently add the tofu cubes into the marinade, ensuring each piece is well-coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid, and let the tofu marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. For the best flavor, marinate for a few hours or overnight if possible.

Step 3: Skewer the Tofu and Vegetables

Preheat your grill or oven to 200°C (400°F). If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for about 30 minutes to prevent burning. Thread the marinated tofu cubes, bell pepper chunks, and onion pieces onto the skewers, alternating between tofu and vegetables.

Step 4: Grill the Tofu Tikka

Place the skewers on the grill or in the oven. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, turning them halfway through, until the tofu is slightly charred and the vegetables are tender. You can also broil them for 2-3 minutes at the end for an extra charred flavor.

Step 5: Serve

Once cooked, remove the skewers from the grill or oven and let them rest for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve hot with naan, rice, or a side of mint chutney for dipping.

  • Choose firm tofu for the best texture and flavor absorption.
  • Experiment with different vegetables such as zucchini, mushrooms, or cherry tomatoes.
