How to Make Indian Baked Goods with Whole Wheat Flour

Making Indian baked goods with whole wheat flour is a delightful way to incorporate healthier options into your diet while enjoying traditional flavors. Whole wheat flour, also known as atta, is rich in nutrients and lends a distinct texture to baked items. Below are some popular Indian baked goods that you can easily prepare using whole wheat flour.

1. Whole Wheat Naan
To make delicious naan, combine 2 cups of whole wheat flour, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1 tablespoon of yogurt in a bowl. Gradually add warm water to form a soft dough. Let it rest for about an hour. Divide the dough into balls and roll them out into ovals. Cook on a hot tawa (griddle) until bubbly, then flip and cook until golden brown. Brush with butter or ghee before serving.

2. Atta Cake
For a moist and delicious cake, preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). In a bowl, mix 1 ½ cups of whole wheat flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and a pinch of salt. In a separate bowl, cream ½ cup of sugar with ½ cup of butter until fluffy. Add 2 eggs and mix well. Gradually add the dry ingredients along with ½ cup of milk to the wet mixture. Pour into a greased cake tin and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

3. Whole Wheat Cookies
Making cookies with whole wheat flour results in a nutritious snack. Combine 1 cup of whole wheat flour, ½ cup of unsalted butter, ½ cup of sugar, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix until smooth. Add chocolate chips or nuts according to preference. Spoon dollops onto a baking tray and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10-12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.

4. Aloo Paratha
For a stuffed flatbread, mash 2-3 boiled potatoes and mix with spices such as cumin, coriander, and green chilies. In another bowl, knead 2 cups of whole wheat flour with water and a pinch of salt, forming a soft dough. Roll out a small ball of dough, fill it with the potato mixture, and roll it out again gently. Cook on a hot tawa with a little oil until both sides are golden brown.

5. Whole Wheat Breads
Whole wheat breads are simple to make and can be enjoyed with various sides. Mix 3 cups of whole wheat flour, 1 packet of instant yeast, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Gradually add warm water to create a dough. Knead for 10 minutes, then let it rise for about an hour. Shape into loaves and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 25-30 minutes.

6. Ladoos
These sweet treats can be made healthier with whole wheat flour. Roast 2 cups of whole wheat flour in a pan until fragrant. In another pan, melt ½ cup of ghee and add the roasted flour, along with ½ cup of jaggery (or sugar) and 1 teaspoon of cardamom powder. Mix well and let it cool slightly, then shape into small balls.

Using whole wheat flour in Indian baked goods not only adds a nutritious twist to these recipes but also enhances their flavor and texture. Enjoy experimenting with these delightful dishes, and make them a staple in your kitchen!
