Ingredients

To make this flavorful Fish Biryani, you will need:

  • 500 grams of firm white fish (such as cod or tilapia), cut into pieces
  • 2 cups basmati rice, soaked for 30 minutes
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 3-4 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves, chopped
  • Whole spices (2-3 cardamom pods, 1-2 cinnamon sticks, 4-5 cloves)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon biryani masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil or ghee for cooking
  • Water as needed

Preparation Steps

Step 1: Marinate the Fish

In a mixing bowl, combine the fish pieces with yogurt, turmeric powder, biryani masala, and salt. Allow the fish to marinate for at least 30 minutes. This step helps in tenderizing the fish and infusing it with flavors.

Step 2: Cook the Rice

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add soaked basmati rice, 1 tablespoon of salt, and cook until the rice is about 70% done. Drain the rice and set it aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Fish Masala

In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat oil or ghee over medium heat. Add whole spices, and allow them to splutter. Next, add the sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown. Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cooking for a few more minutes until fragrant.

Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften. Now add the marinated fish along with the remaining marinade. Gently mix without breaking the fish pieces, and cook for about 10-12 minutes, allowing the fish to cook through and absorb the spices.

Step 4: Layering the Biryani

In the same pot, layer half of the fish mixture at the bottom. Top it with half of the cooked rice. Sprinkle half of the chopped coriander and mint leaves over the rice. Repeat with the remaining fish mixture and then the rest of the rice. Finish with the remaining herbs on top.

Step 5: Final Cooking (Dum Cooking)

Cover the pot with a tight lid. You can seal the edges with dough or a clean kitchen towel to trap the steam. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 20-25 minutes. This "dum" cooking method allows the flavors to meld beautifully.

Serving Suggestions

Once done, gently fluff the Biryani with a fork before serving. Authentic Indian Fish Biryani pairs well with raita (yogurt sauce), salad, or a tangy pickle for a complete meal.
