1. Fish Curry (Meen Kuzhambu)

This traditional fish curry is a staple in South Indian households.

Ingredients:

  • 500g fish (such as tilapia or pomfret)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 onion (sliced)
  • 2 tomatoes (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons tamarind pulp
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add curry leaves and onions.
  2. Sauté until the onions become translucent, then add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft.
  3. Mix in the turmeric and chili powder, followed by the tamarind pulp. Stir well.
  4. Add the fish pieces gently and cover the pan. Cook for 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
  5. Season with salt and garnish with cilantro before serving.

2. Prawn Masala

This spicy prawn masala is perfect paired with rice or flatbreads.

Ingredients:

  • 500g prawns (cleaned and deveined)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 tomatoes (pureed)
  • 2 teaspoons coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a pan, heat oil and add curry leaves and the chopped onion. Fry until golden brown.
  2. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
  3. Incorporate the tomato puree and cook until the oil separates.
  4. Add coriander, red chili, and turmeric powder. Mix well.
  5. Add prawns and salt. Cook until they turn pink and are cooked through. Serve hot.

3. Crab Curry (Njandu Curry)

This crab curry is a must-try for seafood lovers, brimming with southern flavors.

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg crab (cleaned and cut into pieces)
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2 green chilies (slit)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste

  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • Salt to taste
