How to Make Indian Prawn Soup

Indian prawn soup, also known as prawn rasam, is a flavorful and aromatic dish that combines the spicy essence of Indian cuisine with the delightful taste of prawns. This soup is not only easy to prepare but is also packed with nutrients. Here’s how you can make a delicious Indian prawn soup right at home.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams of prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons of oil (coconut oil or any vegetable oil)
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons of rasam powder (available in Indian grocery stores)
  • 4 cups of water or fish stock
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish

Instructions

Preparing the Soup Base

1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter.
2. Once the seeds begin to pop, add the chopped onions and sauté until they become translucent.
3. Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies to the pot, stirring well for 1-2 minutes until aromatic.
4. Incorporate the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften, which should take about 3-4 minutes. You can also add turmeric powder and stir for even flavor.

Adding Prawns and Seasoning

5. Once the tomatoes are cooked, add the rasam powder and salt into the mixture. Stir well to combine.
6. Pour in the water or fish stock and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to a simmer.
7. After about 5 minutes, add the cleaned prawns to the soup and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes. The prawns should turn pink and opaque, indicating they are cooked.

Finishing Touches

8. Taste the soup and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If you prefer a bit more heat, consider adding extra green chilies or a dash of red chili powder.
9. Once done, remove from heat and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves. This not only adds color but enhances the flavor.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Indian prawn soup hot, ideally with a side of steamed rice or crispy papadam. This dish can also be enjoyed as a standalone appetizer or a light meal.

Tips for the Perfect Indian Prawn Soup

  • Always use fresh prawns for the best flavor.
  • Feel free to modify the spice levels according to your taste preferences.
  • Incorporating a squeeze of fresh lime just before serving can elevate the taste.

Enjoy your homemade Indian prawn soup, a perfect dish that combines the warmth of Indian spices and the rich flavors of seafood. This comforting soup is perfect for any season!
