How to Make Baked Indian Samosas at Home

Baked Indian Samosas are a delightful and healthier alternative to their fried counterparts. These crispy pastries are filled with a delicious mixture of spiced potatoes and peas. Making them at home is easier than you might think. Follow this step-by-step guide to impress your family and friends with your culinary skills.

Ingredients for Baked Indian Samosas

To make perfect baked samosas, gather the following ingredients:

  • For the Dough:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons oil or melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Water (as needed)
  • For the Filling:
  • 2 large potatoes (boiled and mashed)
  • 1 cup green peas (boiled)
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1-2 green chilies (finely chopped)
  • Salt to taste

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Add the oil or melted butter and mix well. Gradually add water little by little until you form a soft and pliable dough. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.

2. Make the Filling

In a pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them splutter. Stir in the chopped green chilies, followed by the boiled potatoes and green peas. Add the garam masala, coriander powder, cumin powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.

3. Shape the Samosas

After the dough has rested, divide it into small balls. Roll each ball into a thin oval shape, then cut it in half to create two semi-circular pieces. Take one semi-circle, and fold it into a cone shape, sealing the edge with a little water. Fill the cone with the potato-pea mixture, and pinch the open edge to seal the samosa. Repeat this process for all the dough.

4. Bake the Samosas

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper and lightly brush it with oil. Place the samosas on the tray, making sure they do not touch each other. Brush the tops of the samosas with a little oil or melted butter to get that golden color.

5. Bake and Serve

Bake the samosas in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until they are crisp and golden brown. Once done, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Serve hot with mint chutney or tamarind sauce for a delicious snack.

Tips for Perfect Samosas

To enhance your samosas, consider these tips:

  • Add spices according to your taste preference.
  • Experiment with different fillings such as lentils or cheese.
  • Make sure the dough is not too sticky by adjusting the water amount.
  • Serve fresh and warm for the best experience.

Enjoy your homemade baked Indian Samosas as a tasty snack or appetizer. They are sure to be a hit at any gathering!
