How to Make Goan Fish Stew at Home

Goan fish stew is a delightful and aromatic dish that captures the essence of coastal Indian cuisine. With its warm spices and fresh ingredients, making this hearty stew at home is easier than you might think. Follow this simple recipe to recreate this classic Goan delicacy.

Ingredients

To prepare a rich and flavorful Goan fish stew, gather the following ingredients:

  • 500 grams of fresh fish (preferably pomfret or kingfish)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 4-5 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon of red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of oil (coconut oil preferred)
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Juice of 1 lime

Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the Fish

Begin by cleaning the fish thoroughly. Cut it into bite-sized pieces and season with salt, lime juice, and a little turmeric. Let it marinate for about 15-20 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients.

Step 2: Making the Base

In a heavy-bottomed pot or a deep pan, heat the oil over medium flame. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent. Next, add the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking until fragrant.

Step 3: Add Tomatoes and Spices

Once the onions are slightly golden, add the chopped tomatoes along with the turmeric, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook this mixture until the tomatoes break down and the oil separates from the masala, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 4: Incorporating Coconut Milk

Pour in the coconut milk and stir well to combine all the ingredients. Allow the stew to simmer for a few minutes. If the mixture is too thick, you can add a little water to achieve your desired consistency.

Step 5: Adding the Fish

Gently add the marinated fish pieces to the pot, being careful not to stir too vigorously. Add the slit green chilies and adjust the salt to your taste. Cover the pot and let the stew simmer on low heat for about 10-12 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flaky.

Step 6: Final Touches

Once the fish is cooked, remove the pot from heat. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves for added flavor and color. Serve the Goan fish stew hot with steamed rice or crusty bread to soak up the delicious gravy.

Tips for Perfect Goan Fish Stew

  • Opt for fresh, local fish for the best flavor.
  • Feel free to adjust the spice levels according to your taste preferences.
  • For an extra layer of flavor, you can add a splash of vinegar or tamarind extract.

Enjoy your homemade Goan fish stew, a dish that truly embodies the flavors of Goa!
